After I left work the following day, I went to check up on my dad and the fairies, hoping that Steve and the other gargoyles had listened to Nathan and decided against going back to interrogate them all again. It was far better for them to search the forest and to question people I hadn’t used my lie-sensing power on. With the exception, of course, of a certain fairy who’d evaded all attempts to pin him down. I’d have to figure out what to do about him soon and whether keeping his secret was worth risking the safety of the other fairies.

I came to a startled halt when the pixie appeared in a flash of glitter on the path in front of me. “What’s up?”

The pixie flew up into the air, beckoning to me with urgent chittering noises. Assuming he wanted to lead me to the forest, I followed him uphill, but instead of heading towards the forest, he veered away towards the university campus instead. Had the posters reappeared again? Or were Rodney and his friends causing more trouble?

I picked up speed until I reached the fence circling the campus, switching to fairy mode and flying over. Part of me expected to find the other fairies hiding in the shadows again, but nobody waited on the other side of the fence. I didn’t see any new anti-fairy posters on the sides of the buildings, either, so why had the pixie brought me here? I looked for him, but he’d disappeared somewhere among the maze of buildings.

For the lack of any better ideas, I turned into human mode again and walked to the library, figuring I might as well check in with Samuel while I was there.

The vampire greeted me at the door with a fanged smile. “This is a pleasant surprise, Blair. Can I help you with something?”

“Um…” I came here because the pixie led me to campus without explaining why. “I’m looking for more information on the fairies.”

“Did you read the last book I loaned you?” he asked.

“Most of it,” I said. “I’m not really looking for a guide to fairies, though. I want to see where this children-kidnapping idea originated.”

“Ah.” He turned towards the shelves. “You’ll want the folklore section. The two overlap in some aspects, of course, but like other stories about paranormals written by those without direct experience with our world, there are elements that are entirely fictitious. This way.”

The vampire moved among the winding shelves, and I did my best to remember the way back so I wouldn’t end up lost in the stacks. He then came to a halt beside a relatively small section marked Folklore. Most of the aged books looked more like they belonged to the normal world than the magical one, which made a kind of sense. Magical people didn’t need to write down fairy tales when they lived the impossible every day.

Sensing Samuel was about to leave me alone to browse, I said, “Did you talk to the other staff about those posters?”

“There was no need,” he said.
